Effect: Consumption: After consuming a seed, arousal increases by one level and grants a +1 bonus to Courage for the next hour; further eating has no effect. In addition, the user gains d6 DP from an electrical discharge in the mouth. Since the seed requires lightning strikes to ripen, there is a 16-20 chance on a d20 roll of being struck by lightning during harvest (3d6+8 DP, metal armor wearers gain an additional 1d6 DP).
Price: 10/15 TE
Recipes: Elixiers: Hero’s Metalworking Potion: It is possible to extract iron from the seeds of the hissing bush. Weapons made of hissing bush iron grant +1 hit point, but during a thunderstorm, the weapon has a higher chance of attracting lightning (18-20 on a d20).
Durability: the seed has a shelf life of 2d6 years
Of the many survival strategies chosen by creatures in Riesland, that of the hissing bush is certainly one of the most unusual. This shrub occurs almost exclusively in arid regions with a high probability of lightning strikes, where it thrives like no other plant. Its success is based on the storage of ores, which the plant draws from the soil, in its buds.
The hissing bush grows very tall and wide, thus offering a multitude of potential points for lightning strikes. The mechanism has not yet been precisely described, but the plant seems to miraculously harness the power of lightning to ripen its seeds. With a characteristic hiss, these are released into the sky shortly after the lightning strike and thus spread.
Many tribes on the barren steppes consider this plant sacred, and it is said that consuming one of its seeds shortly after a lightning strike will produce true heroes — at least if one survives the inevitable near-death experience that follows…
What does my hero know about the Hissing Bush?
- The hissing bush is so named because it ejects its seeds with a hissing sound after a lightning strike. Without a lightning strike, the seeds won’t ripen.
- The tree draws metals from the ground. Wherever a hissing bush grows, iron or other metals can be found. Unfortunately, the trees only grow in barren areas.
- The seeds increase virility, are an ingredient in a hero’s drink that turns even wimps into fierce warriors, and can also be used to forge swords.
