Lantern

“The lantern was considered a sign of the gods during the Dark Ages. Many Churches still use lanterns in ceremonies and as decoration in their temples. Our Lord Praios cherishes their light.”
-Cassia of Baltrea, Blessed One of Praios, 1034 FB

The simplest version is the candle lantern, which uses a candle for its light source. Far brighter, but also more expensive, is the oil lantern, which is an oil lamp with a protective outer casing. Both variants have one disadvantage: The light shines from the lantern evenly in all directions. Depending on the type, the lamp must first be set down and opened to be extinguished. A leather coat thrown on top hides the light but at the risk of catching on fire.

The bullseye lantern, invented to solve these shortcomings, features a metal case with sliding shutters that can restrict or focus the light. It is uncertain whether this clever innovation was initially conceived by miners or by thieves.

Lanterns are used throughout Aventuria, since they protect the light source from rain and wind while protecting the environment from an unintended conflagration. They are especially popular in middle and northern Aventuria, in mines, and at sea. Oil lanterns also are used in the Lands of the Tulamydes.
