Padlock

“Ingerimm didn’t invent locks, and neither did Hesinde. They are a gift from Praios, to protect you from thieves.”
—Cassia of Baltrea, Blessed One of Praios, 1034 FB

Locks usually cannot be removed from the item they secure, such as doors or chests, but this is not true for padlocks, which are portable and often used to secure item such as cabinets and gates. Burglars often acquire padlocks for training purposes.

Padlocks come in different sizes and are made from different materials. Nobles use small, adorned versions, made from gold or silver, to lock jewelry boxes and toy chests, while treasurers use sturdy, complex-looking versions to secure coin boxes and treasure chests and deter criminals.

Optional additions include hidden needles that spring out and stab someone who opens the lock incorrectly. Particularly callous or unscrupulous people coat these needles with poison. Thieves fear these locks as much as they despise encountering a heavily rusted padlock when they are in a rush.

Padlocks can be purchased in all larger cities, especially in the Horasian Empire, which is known for its exceptionally well crafted mechanical items. Dwarves make the best padlocks and are widely believed to have invented them.
