Perfume
“A drop of rose oil, two drops of lotus essence, and four drops of jasmine flower, and an enticing fragrance is ready.”
-Shanya ash Shaya, Blessed One of Rahja, 1035 FB
To rid themselves of the smell of the road or to stand out from the crowd, many burghers and nobles of both sexes, from the Bornland to Al’Anfa, use perfume. Alcoholbased fragrances preserve a great variety of pleasant scents, such as flowers, herbs, and various spices. Some fragrances, such as honey or ambergris, have an animal origin. Perfumes are dabbed onto the skin or are trickled on a piece of cloth or clothing to envelop the wearer in a lasting cloud of pleasant scents.
The Horasian city of Belhanka is the center of perfume production, although perfume is made wherever the Church of Rahja has influence. Fragrances make popular offerings to the Church. Many Blessed Ones of Rahja wear perfume and enjoy spreading pleasant scents throughout their temples.
Perfumes are not exclusively luxuries, but few can afford the best and most famous examples. No Horasian collection of cosmetics and perfumes would be complete without Canals of Grangor No 5, the famous 1,001 Ecstasies, or Rahjanissimo, a rose-scented perfume. In the Lands of the Tulamydes, the cinnamonscented Princess Nedime is the top-selling perfume. Farahmar, with its beguiling touch of jasmine, is popular in Arania (Mhaharanyat), and Al’Anfans prefer Geranium, or Tiki, which is said to carry the scent of the jungle.
