Almost everyone in Aventuria values soap for washing away the dust of the road and a hard day’s work. Soap is easily made by boiling fat, water, and wood ash (lye) in a pot. Before pouring the mixture into molds for drying and hardening, the soap maker may add things like perfume or flowers. Most soap is normally sold in chunks cut from a large brick, and the price usually depends on how much the buyer is willing to pay.

Most soap makers cast their product in molds, although expensive bars may be carved to resemble flowers or other shapes. Agents, smugglers, and sly Blessed Ones of Phex hide items or messages in soap for secrecy. Thieves, forgers, and counterfeiters find soap useful for taking impressions of keys and official seals.

According to rumor, a chunk of soap wrapped in cloth or a sock makes an unpleasant but otherwise nonlethal weapon.

Rules

Soap: Anyone who regularly washes with soap gains a +1 TOU bonus on checks for diseases.

Soap can be an improvised weapon when wrapped in a tube or piece of cloth (see page 138).

Soap, perfumed: As with standard soap, but Charisma receives a +1 bonus on Seduction, if the character washed with perfumed soap and the target likes cleanliness and the smell of perfume. If the target of Seduction does not like the smell, it may grant a -1 penalty at the GM’s discretion.
