Candles and Magic Candles
“To invoke a djinni of fire, light six candles and place them at the points of the elemental hexagram.”
-Xaron of Punin, guild mage, modern
All Aventuria uses candles. They light farmer’s cottages, kings’ palaces, Blessed Ones’ temples, and libraries. They are an easily transportable light source that fits in that last bit of space in a hero’s backpack, and they still work even after getting wet.
Candles come in different sizes and are made from different materials. These include beeswax, tallow, and sperm whale oil. Candles can be cast by pouring heated, liquefied material into a mold. Alternatively, dipped candles involve dipping wicks repeatedly in heated liquid material to build up layers. When the candle is of sufficient thickness, it is set aside to cool and harden.
Tallow candles are usually yellowish white and tend to give off sooty smoke. Beeswax candles are dripless and smokeless, glow with a warm, yellow color, and give off a pleasant scent. To cast certain magic rituals, sinister black mages and benevolent spellcasters alike need special magic candles that are made similarly to normal candles but often contain secret ingredients.
