Pocket Watch (Vinsalt Egg)

“A pocket-sized clock? Inconceivable!” -Dalrik Meeltheuer, burgher, Joborn, modern

The Vinsalt Egg, or pocket watch, is a recent invention from the Horasian Empire, a fact that prompts great surprise or jealousy in other regions of Aventuria.

Even though many Horasians can read a clock face (clock towers rise above most cities, displaying the time and ringing bells at regular intervals, and hall clocks display the time in many palazzi and burgher’s homes), pocket watches remain rather uncommon due to their expense. The wealthy wear them mainly for their decorative qualities and associated prestige, not for their ability to give the time, even in the darkest night. Vinsalt Eggs are somewhat sensitive to sand and dirt, and an untended mechanism will stop functioning and require cleaning by an expert.

Vinsalt Eggs fit in the palm of a hand. Most take the shape of an egg, but they also can be oval or round. The clock face, which is protected by a hinged lid, often comes lavishly painted. The metal (often brass) case protects the sensitive mechanism from dirt. The Egg’s clockworks are a masterwork of mechanics. Only the most talented artisans can create such a mechanism, as the many small parts must be crafted individually and then carefully assembled.

Every pocket watch is more than a mechanical achievement. It is also a work of art. The casing is often embellished with precious metals, stones, and engravings. For a small fee, the decorations can be tailored to the customer’s wishes. Family coats of arms and mottos are very popular motifs. Most Eggs attach to the belt or vest, or hang around the neck, via a fob chain that comes in matching colors and ties to a ring mounted on the casing.

Vinsalt Eggs were invented 50 years ago by the Vinsaltan watchmaker, Zechin Olivari. His family’s company still makes watches of every size. The most famous pocket watches of the Horasian Empire now come from the city of Aldyra, which is known for its skilled mechanics.

Merchants and travelers have carried examples of Vinsalt Eggs to the far corners of Aventuria, and some even turn up for sale in rural markets, though at greatly inflated prices due to the distance from the point of manufacture.
