Knife

“He thought he had me, that blackguard. Knocks the sword out of my hands and starts smiling, thinking he’s won. He didn’t reckon on my trusty knife, which is why I am still alive to tell you this story, and he isn’t.”
— Jorge Oakenfield, Andergastan mercenary, 1036 FB

A simple knife is easy to conceal. People often forget that this common piece of cutlery is also a dangerous tool. Whether purchased for combat or secretly stolen during a meal, a knife usually takes the enemy by surprise. Knives can be quickly drawn after losing a primary weapon. Even a filet knife is better than nothing in a pinch, but knives cannot parry most heavier weapons.

The typical knife has a single edge, is the length of a man’s hand, and is perfectly suited to cutting ropes. It requires more strength to wield compared to a dagger, and like daggers, some knives are forged in one piece while others consist of a blade and a simple wooden handle. Butchers, cooks, and rangers often possess many kinds of knives, each designed for a specific use. Some are short, others are long, and some are even fashioned from horn or other materials.

“I’ve never thought of knives as weapons. In the Bornland, even serfs can own these tools.”
